Welcome to My Online Home

My name is Joe Crispin and I am a Christian, a husband, a father, a professional basketball player, a reader, a talker, and now, a blogger. My life is unique; my God is good; my perspective is, I hope, encouraging and entertaining.

My Present Location

Since I tend to move around a bit, I'll communicate my present blogging locale right here. I am currently enjoying my summer months (and of course still training) probably in State College, PA, but possibly in Glassboro, NJ.

Hokey- A Definition

Posted by: Joe | Comments (1)

Slow blogging today- not because of the powerless Macbook, but because of a day long bus trip. Not my favorite, though I almost finished Treasure Island on the way. I see now why it’s a classic. One lesson learned is that I won’t go with the free audiobooks, but will make the purchase next time. You just can’t top a professional reader.

Just for fun today, here’s a word you use daily (if you’re hip like that). Much thanks to my friend Michelle for bringing a smile to my face by using it in an email - and then looking it up!

hokey |ˈhōkē|adjective ( hokier , hokiest ) informal
- mawkishly sentimental : a good-hearted, slightly hokey song.
- noticeably contrived : a hokey country-western accent.

DERIVATIVES - hokeyness (also hokiness) noun
ORIGIN 1940s: from hokum + -y 1 .

Here’s a challenge for you:  Find a way to legitimately use the word ‘hokey’ within the next two days.  Even better:  find a way to legitimately use ‘hokeyness.’  Let me know how it goes.  I would especially like to find out if anyone you are speaking to stops you and asks, “Did you just use the word, ‘hokeyness?’”

Worse comes to worse, you can at least give them a definition.

Economics - A Definition

Posted by: Joe | Comments (16)

Just a heads up: I am going to use this blog to increase my own vocabulary, and maybe yours (if you are as limited as me). Considering the topic of economics came up, I figured I would look it up. Just a simple dictionary definition, but good to check out nonetheless.

economics |ˌekəˈnämiks; ˌēkə-|
plural noun [often treated as sing. ]
the branch of knowledge concerned with the production, consumption, and transfer of wealth.
• the condition of a region or group as regards material prosperity : he is responsible for the island’s modest economics.

ORIGIN late 16th cent.(denoting the science of household management): from economic + the plural suffix -s, originally on the pattern of Greek ta oikonomika (plural), the name of a treatise by Aristotle. Current senses date from the late 18th cent.

Profundity - A Definition

Posted by: Joe | Comments (0)

I could have waited for Erin to read my first post and give me the definition, but then I wouldn’t have had the opportunity to make another post out of it.  And considering I would like to include some dictionary definitions for various words on this blog, I figured I should just exert the energy required to press F12 on my Macbook and then type in the word (also note I had to copy and paste it…you appreciate me now don’t you?).  Without further adieu, here it is:

profundity |prəˈfəndətē|noun ( pl. -ties)

deep insight; great depth of knowledge or thought : the simplicity and profundity of the message.

• great depth or intensity of a state, quality, or emotion : the profundity of her misery.

• a statement or idea that shows great knowledge or insight.

If pressed, I think I could have defined this word with whatever is the antonym of profundity (ok, I looked it up:  ’superficial, simple’).  I certainly wouldn’t have guessed definition number 2, but I like it, particularly if it refers to a profundity of God-intoxicated joy.

Thank You

I appreciate you taking the time to check in with me and to even scroll down to this, the end of the page. Considering you made it all the way to the bottom of the page, I am thinking you either found the material so compelling that you wanted to read more or found it so weak that you kept looking for something worth your time! I hope it was the former. Thanks again.
