A Good Desk: A Bare (or Bear) Necessity
ByI am currently typing this post from a brand-new desk and chair. It’s one I have been waiting for for quite some time. And it is one I asked for numerous times, because for me, a good desk is a necessity for life, wherever I may be.
Around the Crispin house, you might hear us periodically singing a song from the classic Disney movie, Jungle Book. “The Bare Necessities.” Or then again, maybe it’s entitled, “The Bear Necessities” as it is Baloo the Bear’s big gig. I thought of that song when I my desk arrived, because though it is not food and clothing, it is, at least to me, that vital.
If I lack a desk, I am inevitably disorganized and thus, a little scattered. If I have a desk and you find a bit of a mess, chances are it is a reflection of my current state. For it is my hub. My workstation. My organizational Sun. Without it I just cannot make do. And, inevitably, without it I will barely blog.
There might be some folks out there who don’t have a clarified workstation. If that is you, I would encourage you to get on board and make a good desk one of your ‘bear necessities.’ Sure, there may be some who can be organized and orderly without it, but frankly, I find it hard to believe.
Are our desks (or lack of them), at least in this day and age, a reflection of our selves and the efficiency of our lives? Maybe so.
And will the presence of one serve to help me get into that elusive blogging rhythm I have been looking for. I happen to think so, but only time will tell.

I have to have a workstation. Sometimes it is one end of the table like I used in France and Germany and other times it is a true desk. For me, the actual structure of the desk used is much less important than having a defined space to keep my organizational folders, documents, computer, etc. Now that I am in the US, however, I want a desk that conforms to very specific and different needs. Maybe I’m getting pickier, but my current set up, which used to work great, no longer is as pleasant as it once was. Maybe I need to go back to the table. LOL!

I miss my desk at home. Lord willing, I will be home for about 5-6 days over Christmas. I will certainly enjoy a few hours in my office at my desk!
Have you ever read David Allen’s Getting Things Done? That book was pivotal in my desk routine. Not easy getting it settled over here though, so like you said, we have to adjust.

I have not read it, but I did purchase it after Erin recommended it to me a while back. I’m guessing though that I probably do many of the things in his book– I plan my week, I write everything down (well, Things and ical is a lifesaver there), I file paperwork (even when the file is to be filed). Truly, I need an organized life, because I do too much in too little time far too often. LOL! Sadly, I feel most disorganized when Kevin is home after having spent most of the year alone with our son. Hmm… OK, now I need to go get the book out of storage. When we put the house on the market I only kept 10 or so books out. The rest went to the storage unit. BOO!
